Come Blog Along Pattern 01 Post 04

Knitting on the Road: CanadaCanal du Midi • Conwy • Dalarna • Denmark • Friday Harbor • Hiiumaa • Huron Mountain • New England • The Road to Oslo • Santa Fe • Spey Valley • Christmas in Tallinn • Traveler's Stockings • Uinta Cabin • Unst • Whitby

With the heel turn complete and the gusset decreases well underway, at the end of the third week of my Year of Projects I'm in the final stretch on this first pair of socks. Don't you find that the foot and toe go very quickly? The urge to finish I suppose.

It's been hot, hazy and humid here as it has been through most of North America. When we broke the record Thursday for the hottest day ever in July in Toronto, knitting was almost impossible. The wool was actually damp from the humidity and from the sweat from my fingers - the stitches stuck to the needles. Yuck. We've turned a corner weatherwise, returning to more seasonal temps which is a relief.

This sock should be completed in the next couple of days, so next week's update should be a first look at Canal du Midi socks. Now which yarn to select from my stash?

Yes, it's been a huge challenge to knit in this heatwave and wool, no less! I'm wondering if you might like to look for some nice cotton in your stash for your next pair?

I've been following the news here (UK) of the heatwave. One of the nicest treats here is to pick up kniting or crochet that's been sat in a puddle of sunlight on a windowsill, but I can't imagine it being as hot as you are all experiencing. Fingers crossed that your weather returns to normal and stays there. Good luck with your socks, it's interesting to watch them growing. Does a heel flap have to be sewn at all or is it all one piece with the body of the sock?

I find the foot only goes fast on the first sock - on the second one it drags!

I find the need to wash my hands often when knitting or crocheting in the heat so the yarn doesn't stick to my hands. You might see if that helps you.

Looking good! Almost there!

I'm wondering whether your heatwave will make it over to the UK. We tend to get your winter weather about 3 weeks later. I think I'd be moving over to cotton and crochet in the heat. The socks look great and well done for persevering in the humidity xx

Would love to start knitting socks. Maybe I'll try that again after I finish my blanket squares? We'll see. I've tried before and couldn't get the hang of it. Yours look great!

Lovely socks! I can't imagine knitting with wool during a heat wave--but they will be welcome socks come this winter! :)

I can't believe it's actually been hotter in Penna., NY, and NJ than it is here in Florida. The past couple of days has been hot here, but we've had a nice breeze that makes it all tolerable.

Your socks are looking great!

Turning the heel is my favorite part! the knitting up too it goes fast. and then the gusset always feels like it takes forever for me! (but that is just personal preference I suppose) your sock looks awesome!

I have been hoping for some warmer weather, but maybe not as hot as you are having! The sock is looking great, I usually find the second foot drags as I am bored of the pattern by then and want to start something new
