There's an old Chinese proverb that I'm sure you're familar with: better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. For the last few weeks I've been cursing the darkness. I've struggled to make any progress with this second sock because the light in my living room was insufficient to see the intricate stitches of this pattern clearly with this dark yarn.
Suddenly it occurred to me to sit on the other side of the living room in the Barca Lounger usually reserved for company. Doh! The recliner is directly below a bank of pot lights providing light from above and behind the person sitting there. Perfect!
With a handful of productive hours of knitting this week, I've turned the heel of the second sock and made good progress on the foot. And I'm confident that I can finish the sock before the end of the holiday Monday and get started on pattern #3. Much better than cursing the darkness, isn't it!?!

Did I say how much I love that color of yarn? I love the rich, dark, colors even though they can be a challenge to work on.
At least it's more PRODUCTIVE than cursing the darkness. Now whether it's more FUN --- curse you darkness.
Too funny! I find my living room light wonderful for knitting. Until one of the down lights went out. It took me a bit of time before I realized I could just slide down the sofa end where the other corner light was still burning!!
I have a tall torchiere lamp that has a smaller adjustable lamp coming out this side - it's perfect for aiming right at my knitting.
Your sock looks very impressive and it is amazing isn't how often the solution is right there all along. Showing my ignorance, do you make the sock on that 'former thing' or is that just when you put it down?

Glad you thought about lighting a candle. I too move about the room for light, particularly when working with dark yarn. It's really coming along.

I know that problem well. It took a trip to Cornwall before I really got the hang of my Babette colours, and I now don't choose colours after dark as some of them look so different under the low-energy bulbs we have here. I'm glad that you sorted lighting so quickly and productively!

I am loving the colour of the socks and I've no doubt they will be finished on time. You can't ever underestimate the importance of lighting.
